Begin performing "Poems for Two Voices"
Turn in "Season" poem with two required devices (due today or tomorrow, depending on when you perform your "Poem for Two Voices"
HW: Print out performance poem for final exam--select a poem for which you have a strong emotional response. It must be from a published, recognized poet (no poems by "Anonymous," for example) and must be at least 14 lines long. Bring the poem tomorrow for my approval. Recall that my sample was Carl Sandburg's "Chicago."
Remaining "Season" poems due tomorrow. Remaining "Poems for Two Voices" due tomorrow. Fix your four poems w/ MLA citations by Monday, 5/14 for full credit.

WHY CSTs MATTER
Next week, Samohi will participate in our annual state testing, the California Standards Tests. We discussed the individual importance and relevance of these tests today in Period 2, but if you want to review the data and information again in more detail, I've posted it here:
Please see me or email me if you have questions. It's important that all students take this seriously, as it may directly impact your chances for college admissions next year!
Remember, Monday is the English-Language Arts portion of the CST and the EAP part 2 (remember that essay you wrote in mid-March?) supplement. PLEASE go to bed early Sunday night and eat a real breakfast Monday morning (not Flaming Hot Cheetos with a side of Mountain Dew). This matters!
HELP FOR POETRY PROJECTS
Description of Poet Study Project (study of four poems by same poet, poet's life and times, etc.)
Sample formatting for Four Poems (due 5/9)
TPS-FAST Analysis directions (first two due 5/16)
Poetry Journal directions (first two due 5/23)
TPS-FAST Analysis Method for Poetry
T- Title (consider literal and metaphoric meanings)
P - Paraphrase (go through and summarize each stanza in your own words)
S - Speaker (consider the narrator or persona of the poem--is he/she an observer or a participant? How "emotionally close" is the speaker? Is he/she experiencing this event right now, or reflecting back on it later?)
F - Figurative Language (look for at least three patterns - similes, metaphors, repetition, sound devices, rhyme, opposites, or particular patterns of words)
A - Attitude (what is the speaker's attitude toward the subject of the poem? In short, what is the tone?)
S - Shift (where does the poem change? why might this turning point be significant?)
T - Theme (a complete statement that expresses the meaning of the poem and highlights two techniques the poet uses to express that meaning...e.g., In the poem "__title______," [the poet] uses ___device #1______ and _device #2_______ to suggest that __poem's meaning__________.
